OBITUARY: Curtis D. Herron

Curtis D. Herron, 79, Raleigh, passed away Tuesday morning at his home.

He was born to the late Tim and Reecie Herron on April 30, 1935, in Flatwoods, Ky. In 1957, Curt received a bachelor's degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of Kentucky and master's in business administration from St. Louis University in 1963. He married the former Brenda Kay Chaffin in 1965 and they made their lives together in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before retiring to Raleigh in 2005.

He worked as a chemist, plant manager and later owned his own insurance agency in Williamstown, N.J. He was named Man Of The Year and later Business Owner Of The Year in Monroe Township N.J. He was president of the Monroe Township Library Board for many years and through his guidance, leadership and commitment, Williamstown finally built a beautiful new library. He was also president of the Monroe Township Business Association and chairman and vice chairman of the Monroe Township Planning Board for many years.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Brenda Kay; a son, Jonathan and daughter-in-law Dena; and two grandchildren Cara and William, all of Raleigh; a sister-in-law, Pamela Chaffin of St. Louis, Mo.; and a brother, Kent and sister-in-law Carolyn of Russell, Ky.

Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Finnie officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery in Raleigh. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to service time Thursday. A luncheon will be served to friends and family at Mt. Pleasant Social Brethren Church immediately following the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Raleigh Masonic Cemetery, both will be accepted at the funeral home.
