CROSS COUNTRY: St. Bruno girls win state championship

St. Bruno Catholic School's girls cross country team brought home first place at Saturday's Class S State meet in Salem, led by first-place overall individual runner Gabrielle Alongi.

St. Bruno finished with 72 points, 11 better than second place Nashville. All of the Falcons' runners finished in the top 30 in the 190-runner field and received medals.

Alongi crossed the line ahead of them all at a time of 12:20.7. Dakota Krone joined her in the top 10 with a seventh-place showing with a time of 12:39.2.

Grace Alongi (20th, 13:08.5), Kyla Epplin (21st, 13:11.7), Kenzie Rushing (23rd, 13:19.9), Laney Beltz (25th, 13:24.1) and Keely Epplin (30th, 13:29.7) also competed for St. Bruno. Alternate runners included Paige Epplin, Olivia Phillips and Gayle Winter.

In the boys' race, John Alongi led the way for St. Bruno, finishing 19th (11:56.9) to earn a medal. Steven Hirte was 103rd (13:17.8) of the 197 boys runners.
