92nd Birthday Breakfast at Hardee's for Galen Davis
Long-time friends of Du Quoin educator and community historian Galen Davis came together Wednesday at Hardee's to celebrate Mr. Davis' 92nd birthday. Mr. Davis was joined by Carl Campanella, Dawson Duncan, Pete Doerr, Rich Youngman and Charles Swinney. Campanella and Davis are the same age. Carl, proud of his Italian heritage, nudged Galen and said with a smile "You can be 92, but you'll never be a Dego." Mr. Davis was the face of Du Quoin Indian athletics while attending Du Quoin High School before he joined the Army and was a multi-sport athlete at Southern Illinois University following his return from the service. He was a long-time Du Quoin teacher before retirement and in retirement researched and published a history of Du Quoin High School athletic teams. Spending hours at the microfilm reader at the Du Quoin library, he has also put together the histories of past mayors, clerks, police and fire chiefs and commissioners. His more recent project was trying to put together the history of girls' sports in Du Quoin. He has lived a life of integrity and contributing to this community.
