Prep Golf: Williams, Fowler miss out on state tourney bid

It was a day of heartache for Harrisburg's Ryan Williams and Ben Fowler.

The two navigated their way around a wet and windy Acorn Golf Links at Waterloo Tuesday, looking to punch their ticket to this weekend's state tournament.

The pair came up just a bit short.

Ryan Williams rebounded from a frustrating front nine where he shot a 44 and finished with a 37, posting an 81.

Williams' score put him in a three-way tie for 10th and forced three-person playoff for two spots.

Harrisburg head coach Michael Tison said Williams played No. 9 twice in the playoff and in both instances bogeyed, while the other player came away with par.

"Ryan is obviously disappointed," Tison said. "It was getting really late and it was nearly dark when he finished his last playoff hole, so it was a very long day. I thought Ryan showed a lot of poise to come back the way he did."

Fowler was steady in his round posting back-to-back 41's to finish with an 82.

"Ben continued his solid play and obviously scores were extremely high across the board today," Tison added. "There were 20 mph winds almost all day and made scoring difficult."

The IHSA Class 2A State Tournament will be held this weekend at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal.
