Chester stroms past C-Z-R, 47-21
CHESTER -- Blake Eggemeyer ran for 233 yards and two touchdowns, and Chester fought through a back-and-forth second quarter to beat Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton 47-21 on Friday at W.O. Smith Field.
Eggemeyer turned the Yellow Jackets' first play from scrimmage into a 80-yard touchdown and also had an 84-yard score that put Chester (5-1) ahead 21-7 after Wyatt Roth's extra point kick.
The 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior running back had 177 of his yards at halftime, while his 84-yard score tied the school record set by Curt Gilpin on Aug. 29, 2003 against Red Bud.
"He's so small, so his pad level is low," Lee said of Eggemeyer. "He's hard to bring down and at one point, three kids had a bead on him.
"He runs one over, spins off another one and he changes directions well. Him and Charles (Morefield) both do that."
C-Z-R quarterback Luke Saeger was 28-for-41 passing for 295 yards and three touchdowns for the Bearcats (0-6), with receiver Josh Calloni accounting for 214 of those yards with a score.
Charles Morefield, Hunter Howie, Andrew Frazer, Cody Eggemeyer and Issiac Wingerter also had touchdowns for Chester, which has a bye week next week.
"I thought our kids executed," Lee said. "We took care of it and I never really felt the game was in doubt outside of the first quarter."
The teams combined for four touchdowns in a span of one minute, 33 seconds early in the second quarter - including a 75-yard kickoff return from Hunter Howie that gave Chester a 27-14 lead after the extra point try missed.
Chester took its 13-point advantage into the locker room at halftime.
"We didn't tackle very well," said C-Z-R coach Josh McCurren. "We tend to give up the big play on defense, but the kids are getting better at it and that's what we're working on day-in and day-out.
"When you get into a shootout like that, Chester has a lot of weapons and we just didn't keep up with them."
Morefield finished with 100 yards on five carries for the Yellow Jackets, while Andrew Frazer had 43 yards on three carries.
Lineman Cody Eggemeyer also got in on the fun with a 3-yard touchdown run with 9:33 left in the third quarter that extended Chester's lead to 41-14.
"With all due respect to C-Z-R, and I think Coach McCurren does a really good job, but I never felt the game was in question," Lee said. "Once we saw a quarter's worth, I felt like we were going to win as long as we got out of here injury-free and didn't collapse.
"After the hard game (against Johnston City), I thought we rebounded very nicely and did a good job."
As Chester enters its bye week, the Black Diamond Conference crown is up for grabs with four teams - Johnston City, Eldorado, Fairfield and the Yellow Jackets - all with one loss with three weeks left in the regular season.
Chester will host the Eagles for Senior Night on Oct. 17. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
"It definitely can be," Lee said on if the extra preparation time can help. "We're really film geeks. We will watch this film, we will watch film and watch film and watch film.
"The bye week is weird, but the last couple of years we have gone out in the first round and I feel part of it is because we were worn down. We aren't very big and we ask our kids to do a lot.
"I feel preparation-wise, (the bye week) is going to help us and physically, it's going to help us."
Last time against Eldorado:
Brad Asselmeier had 93 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns, and Chester pulled away from Eldorado in the second half of a 34-18 win.
