GOLF: DHS's Valier, PCHS's Thompson earn All-SIRR medals
Three Nashville golfers shot in the 70's at Tuesday's Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Boys Golf Tournament as the Hornets won the Mississippi side of the event in comfortable fashion with a team score of 318, well ahead of second-place Carterville's 337. Jacob Eklund from Carterville posted the low round of the day at Hickory Ridge Golf Course with an 18-hole score of 72.
Pinckneyville finished the day tied for third with Sparta at 368, led by Grant Thompson's 87, which placed him in a tie for ninth in the Mississippi Division to earn an All-Conference medal. Lee Wittenauer (89), Alec Brand (91), Hunter Clark (101), Thomas Huggins (112) and Kyle Luke (131) also took part in the event for the Panthers.
For the Indians, Jacob Valier also shot an 87 to tie Thompson for ninth place and earned All-Conference honors. Ethan Keller (91), John Monroe (105), Noah Campbell (106) and Grant Woodside (122) were the other Du Quoin golfers to compete for the sixth-place Indians (389).
Massac County won the Ohio Division side of the tournament with a score of 309, led by Luke Wieneke's 76, which was best of the Ohio Division golfers.
