OBITUARY: Charles W. “Red” Smith

Charles W. "Red" Smith, 87 of Shawneetown, passed away at the Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado 3:35 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014.

He was born on April 18, 1927, in Bowlesville, the son of Eschol B. Smith Sr. and Ann Violet (Barnes) Smith Barnard. Red married Emma Stacey on June 8, 1966. He retired in 1994 from the Department of Conservation as a game warden and he also owned and operated Smith Realty. An World War II Army veteran he was also a member Masonic Lodge No. 2 and accepted Scottish Rite in the Valley of Evansville.

Red is survived by his wife, Emma Smith of Shawneetown; one daughter, Karen Belford and husband Wayne of Junction; one daughter-in-law, Sue Underwood Kincheloe and husband John of Meppen; three sisters, Ginny Leonberger of Shawneetown, Betty Smith of Shawneetown and Evelyn Brugger of Equality; three brothers, Harold Smith of Harrisburg, Bill Smith of Elizabethtown, Eschol Smith Jr. of Rosiclare; five grandchildren, Charli Elizabeth and Zack Belford, Melissa and husband Ted Lorrissoy, Becky and husband Keith Baecht and Brett Underwood; four great grandchildren, Jerod and wife Heather Seivers and Brittani Seivers, Matthew and Samuel Baecht; one special nephew, Chris Stacey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hershel and Hansel Smith; one son, Larry Underwood. Visitation for Red will be held 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown. Funeral service will be at the funeral home 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, with Pastor Scott Luckett officiating. Burial will follow the service at Hogan Cemetery near Shawneetown.
