Carrier Mills firefighters plan for Catskin Days

Carrier Mills firefighters are planning three events to coincide with Catskin Days.

The department will again be offering barbecued Boston butts for sale, to be picked up on the Catskin Days weekend. Annually, the fire department in a fundraising effort, offers the public some of the best barbecued Boston butts available in the area. This event also also assists the city by defraying costs of the fire department.

It is best to pre-order because the department only cooks 150 butts. Orders can be placed though the Carrier Mills Water office, any Carrier Mills firefighter or Fire Chief Jerry Choat. The water office phone number is (618) 994-2205, Choat's number is (618) 926-1972.

The cost per butt is $35 and they can be picked up at the Carrier Mills municipal building during the day on Oct. 9 and Oct. 10.

To quote Carrier Mills mayor Lewis Shaw, "People should pre-order because these butts are too good to be missed!"

Water fights

The Carrier Mills Fire Department will be hosting their annual Fire Department Water Fights on Sunday, Oct. 12.

This event pits area fire departments against each other in a variety of games which test water-related firefighting skills. This year will see the games of Table Top, 3-Man and Wild Hose and will be held one block west of the fire station on Clark Street in Carrier Mills.

Games start at 2 p.m. with registration at 1 p.m. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place. Any questions can be directed to Travis Parks at (618)841-7723. The public is encouraged to come out and wrap up the Catskin Days weekend with this wild and wet display of fire fighting expertise.

Benefit dinner

The department will be holding its annual fundraising dinner on Saturday, Oct. 11 during the Carrier Mills Catskin Days Festival.

This is part of the departments ongoing efforts to assist the village defray the costs of the department.

The dinner will be held at the Carrier Mills Municipal Building between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

This dinner coincides with the Catskin Days Parade day, with the parade starting at 1 p.m. This is a great way to start a day at the Catskin Day festival and the public is encouraged to come out and support a good cause and enjoy at day in Carrier Mills.
