Prep Golf: Diamond Cutters
If there is one sport more unpredictable than the game of golf, Eldorado head coach Greg Goodley wants to see it.
That's why not even the longtime Eagles golf skipper could have predicted what would have happened Wednesday at Franklin County Country Club.
A pair of 75's from Ashton and Taylor Goodley helped propel Eldorado to a team total 336 as they won the Black Diamond Conference girls golf title for a fourth straight year.
Ashton and Taylor's pair of 75's tied both for first place, but to determine medalist honors, the two had to go to a playoff, where Ashton got the best of her twin sister on the third hole.
Taylor lipped a birdie putt on No. 18 that rolled some six-feet past the hole and her par putt on the comeback came up half a roll short as she finished with a bogey. Ashton finished with a par for medalist honors.
Taylor Aldridge tied for fourth overall with a 90 and Jacqlyn Artman shot a 96th for eighth place.
Ashton and Taylor Goodley, along with Aldridge and Artman all made BDC All Conference.
Sydney Tate finished with a 98 for the Eagles, while younger sister and freshman Keeley added a 112 for the Eagles.
Carmi-White County finished second on the girls' side with a 374, while Trico added a 397. Goreville (441), Zeigler-Roylaton-Christoper (447) and Chester (494) rounded out the team scoring.
Afterwards it was all smiles for Eldorado, almost literally, as golfers on both sides lined up for pictures and selfies with Taylor and Ashton Goodley.
"This is a nice feat for them," Goodley said. "Even for all of our seniors, this has been a goal not just this year, but for four years, so to see them accomplish this is something that I think they know is special."
The magnitude and longevity of the four-peat comes down to consistency for Goodley.
"The girls have been consistent and have played well," he said. "Ashton and Taylor have been able to shoot some good scores, which has obviously helped, but more than that, knowing that there are constantly teams out there looking to knock you off, I think shows a lot of the determination that we have."
