Prep Volleyball: Bulldogs fall in straight sets to MCHS

The Harrisburg High School varsity volleyball team fell in straight sets to Massac County Thursday night, losing 25-23 and 25-15 at Davenport Gymnasium.

With the loss, Harrisburg falls to 3-8 on the season and are now 1-2 in SIRR Ohio Conference play.

Jessica Schwartz had 11 serving points for Harrisburg as no missed serves was key to keeping Harrisburg in the game according to Harrisburg head coach Heather Cox.

"We had a great first game with excellent coverage and key defense from Senior libero Haley Price," Cox said. "Our two freshmen middles Bryleigh Buchanan and Matty Hawkins worked hard to protect our court on the net.

"The second game was a different story where we struggled on serve receive and in typical Harrisburg fashion we dug ourselves in a big hole. There was a huge shift for us the second game however when our girls didn't do what they typically do when their down in game two. They did not give up and they fought hard and worked themselves back into the game. The girls held Massac at 24 points for six straight serves. That is a hug mental victory for us to make a comeback like that. Hopefully it is a sign that our mental game is starting to catch up with our physical ability."

On Wednesday, Harrisburg lost to Norris City-Omaha-Enfield 25-21 and 25-20.

Despite 11 serves on the night, Cox said that small mental mistakes prevented the Bulldogs from coming away with the win.

"We made lost of unforced errors," she said. "We are still struggling with getting down on ourselves and we need the girls to step up and lead."

JV falls in straight sets

Harrisburg lost 25-20 and 25-8 to Massac County and 25-16 and 25-12 to the Cardinals where poor serving (six missed serves) along with poor communication led to a tough night for the Bulldogs.

Harrisburg is scheduled to play host to Carbondale on Monday.
