Chester varsity defeats Vienna-Goreville 61-19

A little over a week after limiting Hamilton County to just 70 yards of total offense in the season opener, the Chester varsity football team held Vienna-Goreville to just 36 yards and five first downs in a 61-19 victory on Saturday in Vienna.

Chester (2-0) led 48-12 at halftime and had a running clock in the second half.

"I liked what we did defensively," said Chester coach Bryan Lee. "We're pretty fast off the ball and I think that still surprises people.

"They see our little butts come off the bus and are probably not all that impressed. But we've got guys who come get after you and they did a good job of that.

"We were able to get a lot of guys some carries and that's kinda nice as well."

The Yellow Jackets spread the ball around once again, getting touchdowns from eight different sources. Issiac Wingerter had a team-high 13 carries for 44 yards, helping to fill the void after junior Blake Eggemeyer left with a shoulder injury.

Eggemeyer had five carries for 26 yards and a touchdown, giving him five scores in the first two games.

"Blake Eggemeyer dinged his shoulder," Lee said. "It's hard to gauge how bad Blake is hurt because he'll tell you he's fine.

"The last play I saw him, he blocked a kid off the edge with one arm, holding the other one close to his side and that's all I needed to see."

Chester didn't miss a beat in Eggemeyer's absence, building a 28-6 lead at the end of the first quarter after Vienna-Goreville scored less than three minutes into the game on a 20-yard touchdown catch by Gerald Blanco.

The Yellow Jackets rattled off six straight touchdowns after that, including three in a minute and 31 seconds.

"All-in-all, I thought our offensive line did a pretty good job of blocking again," Lee said. "If you told me our offensive line would be as smart as they are this year and as aggressive, I don't know if I would have believed you early-on."

Defensively, Chester sophomore Jake Golding led the Yellow Jackets with seven tackles, while Luke Hartman had five and Jordan Berner added four.

Up next, the Yellow Jackets host Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn on Friday at 6 p.m. at W.O. Smith Field. The Red Devils are 0-2 under new coach Mike McKee.

"They've got a fast little quarterback and they're going to run the spread," Lee said of S-V-W-W. "They've got a running back who goes pretty well with him and they've got a big offensive line.

"They're going to make us play responsibility football and I think it will be a real challenge for us."
