Elverado High School students taking the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge” at 2:30 p.m. today

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've seen the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge sweep the internet, prompting millions of people from Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy to Derek Jeter to dump water on themselves for charity. Even President Obama has been challenged.

Elverado High School students will take the challenge at 2:30 p.m. today on their football field in Elkville. Business instructor, student council sponsor and cheerleading coach Donna Waller believes that more than 100 students will money and take the challenge to benefit ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) Research. It's the same neuro-muscular disease that took the life of beloved local WDQN broadcaster Gary Showalter years ago. But just how did the challenge get started?

It got its start among golfers as a way to support their favorite charities. Pro golfer Chris Kennedy challenged his cousin Jeanette Senerchia, whose husband Anthony suffers from ALS.

At the end of the day, if you know somebody or have a family member who has been affected by ALS, you know how important the challenge is.

Senerchia's dream is to have her husband see their young daughter grow up. The challenge, she says, has taken them a huge step forward toward a cure.

Senerchia's husband has suffered from ALS for the past 11 years, 1010 WINS' Kevin Rincon reported.
