Sheriff: Hiring republican Josh Cushman simply a case of best candidate for the job

Incumbent Democrat sheriff Keith Kellerman didn't mince words when talking about his recent hiring of jailer Josh Cushman--son of Gina Cushman--one of the county's first ladies of republican politics.

"I don't play politics," said Kellerman. "Some people will try to make this an issue, but it's not."

Kellerman said, "He is a young man with a college degree in criminal justice. He was the best candidate."

Kellerman said this isn't just his assessment, but those around him, as well.

Cushman joined the sheriff's department staff about two weeks ago.

He is one of approximately 40 staff members including sworn officers, jailers, clerical and support personnel.

It will make points with some republicans while some democrats will, no doubt, serve up criticism.

But, Kellerman said quality personnel in the department will best serve the department.

Kellerman will be opposed in the November election by deputy and republican Steve Bareis.
