Indian Pride Weekend: A three-day celebration of Du Quoin education and sports Oct.3, 4 & 5

The Du Quoin Dist. 300 educational foundation and the Dist. 300 Athletic Association Thursday announced plans for the inaugural Indian Pride Weekend to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3, 4 & 5.

It is largely a fundraising weekend but with a lot of engaging fun and a sense of community along the way.

A letter has gone out to friends of the school district from foundation committee member Sandy Stanhouse explaining the weekend.

This joint effort brings together the academic and extra-curricular facets of our school district to raise funds for two important components of our student's education. These two aspects which have been strong components in our school district have been detrimentally impacted due to state budget cuts and the subsequent reduction of funding by the state for K-12 education. Funds raised for the Foundation would be used for classroom and grade level grants/ field trips, and student scholarships. Funds raised for the athletic program would be used to purchase supplies/purchase equipment/ and provide transportation to all athletic events.

The Indian Pride Weekend event will take place on Friday, Oct. 3, Saturday, Oct. 4, and Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014. The event will consist of the following activities:

Friday, Oct. 3,

-BBQ Chicken Dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. prior to the DHS football game vs. Sparta

Saturday, Oct. 4,

-5K Run/Walk at the DHS Track beginning with registration at 8:00 a.m.

-Slow Pitch Softball Tournament at the Ballpark at DHS starting at 9:00 a.m.

-Dinner/Dance/Auction Event at the Du Quoin State Fairground Grandstand beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 5

-Athletic Association Golf Scramble at Red Hawk Country Club beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The foundation is seeking an item donation toward the auction part of the Saturday night Dinner-Dance-Auction.
