OBITUARY: Novella Van

Novella Van, age 93, longtime resident of Shawneetown, died peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2014, in the Ridgway Nursing and Rehab Center surrounded by her family.

Novella was born in Island Station, Ky., on Feb. 17, 1921, to the late John and Ludie (Moore) Hafley.

She was married on Dec. 23, 1938, to Virgil Van who preceded her in death in 1973. Novella was a very hard worker and enjoyed being around her family and friends. She loved to go out and eat and enjoy life. She was a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend and will be so missed by the community.

Novella is survived by two sons, Arval and Anita Van and Tilden and Mary Van all of Shawneetown; three daughters, Marlene and Roy Lynch of Ridgway, Virgie and Brian Patton of Shawneetown and Joyce and Stanley Weddell of Geneva, Ky.; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by four daughters, Wanda Osborne, Wilma Gobtop, Lois Taylor and Opal Matthews; and a great-grandchild, Jaclyn.

Visitation for Novella was 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Cox & Son Funeral Home in Shawneetown. Her funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the funeral home. The Rev. Michael Rushing will officiate and interment will follow in the Hogan Cemetery in Shawneetown.

He is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Uhring and Betty Abner; and four brothers: Randy Duncan, Billy Duncan, Larry Duncan and Ronnie Duncan.
