BASEBALL: P-DQ Legion rolls over Metropolis
Pinckneyville-Du Quoin rolled to a 13-3 home victory over Metropolis in Thursday night's Senior American Legion match-up at Ridgon Field, plating four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the short-game walk-off victory, in a game schedule for nine frames.
Both starter Joey Burris and relief pitcher Caleb Dahn were strong on the mound, with Burris going four innings and allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks, and Dahn finishing off the last three innings with one run giving up on two hits and two walks. Burris struck out eight batters, Dahn fanned three.
Metropolis Post #306 jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first after two hits, a walk and an error by the Pinckneyville-Du Quoin defense.
But Posts 2504 & 647 responded with four in the bottom half of the inning. Camdon Mercier started things off with a walk, then Nolan Luke, Adam Banach and Gabe Yearian each hit singles before a two-out double by Kaleb Miller.
Dahn doubled in a run in the third, and P-DQ padded their lead to 6-2 with another run in the fourth when Jacob Valier scored after reaching on an error.
Dahn and Banach singled during a two-run fifth for Pinckneyville-Du Quoin, and then in the seventh, 2504/647 put it away with a four-run inning. Dahn, Mercier and Dalton Bigham had hits during the team's last at-bat, with Metropolis also handing out four free passes to help P-DQ's cause.
Pinckneyville-Du Quoin's 14 hits came from Mercier (1-2, 3 BB), Luke (2-4, BB), Banach (2-3, 2 BB), Bigham (1-4, BB), Valier (2-4), Yearian (2-4), Miller (1-2, 2B, 2 BB) and Dahn (3-4, 2B).
2504/647's scheduled game on Saturday has been cancelled, meaning they will next take the field at Marion on Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
