Prep Baseball: Bulldogs Take Two

It was a clean sweep for the Harrisburg softball team Saturday in its own invitational as the Bulldogs knocked off Carmi 11-1 in five innings, followed by a 4-1 win over nearby Galatia-Thompsonville.

The Bulldogs (3-0) got a strong performance from freshman McKenzie Sullivan against Century as she picked up her first win of the season.

Sullivan gave up a hit, a run and struck out two, while walking one.

At the plate, Sullivan went 2-for-2, while Ashley Ferrell finished 2-for-2 as well with an RBI.

The Bulldogs were led by Hanna Jones and Brittany Reynolds, who each went 3-for-3 at the dish. Reynolds finished with five RBIs, while Jones tacked one three.

Hannah Davis rounded out the top hitters for Harrisburg as she went 1-for-2.

Reynolds now has 10 RBIs on the young season, while receiving praise from her head coach.

"Brittany and Hanna are both seeing the ball really well right now," Stafford said. "I think Sullivan is doing a tremendous job as a freshman in the leadoff spot for us."

Harrisburg 4, Galatia 1

After Galatia-Thompsonville (2-1) tied the game at 1-all in the top of the second, the Bulldogs rallied for a three-run third inning highlighted by three errors from the Bearcats.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Ashley Ferrell walked which was followed by a base hit by Jones, putting runners at first and second and then Reynolds got a base hit to load bases. Hutchinson hit a comebacker to Galatia-Thompsonville reliever Emily Reed, who threw home for the force out and Katie Ramsey threw to first to complete the double play, but the ball sailed away, allowing Jones to score.

With runners at first and third, Harrisburg ran a delayed steal, but Reed's throw to second went into centerfield, scoring Realynn Boma, who was courtesy running for Reynolds. Hutchinson went to third on the throw and the ensuring throw to third, got by allowing Hutchinson to score.

G-T lone run in the second came from a lead off single from Elizabeth Sloan, who took two extra bases on a Harrisburg error in right field and scored on a base hit by Brooke Burris.

Jones picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the year for Harrisburg. The senior allowed one run on four hits, while striking out seven.

Larissa Bond (1-1) took the loss going 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out five and walking two.

Reed went 4 2/3 innings, allowing an unearned run, a hit and striking out five, while walking one.

Galatia 14, Century 2

Emily Reed hit for the cycle Saturday, ripping a home run in the third inning and driving in five runs.

Reed helped herself out by picking up her first win of the season in the circle as she struck out six in three innings, allowing just one hit.

Burris came in of relief for Reed, taking care of the last two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four.

Fletcher went 2-for-4 at the dish, while Bond and Sloan each went 2-for-3. Bond drove in three runs and Sloan had an RBI.
