Box Office: Divergent Opens Strong; Muppets Flops
Divergent dominated the box office this weekend, earning a whopping $56 million in its debut, Box Office Mojo reports. Though the young adult dystopian adaptation fell short of Twilight 's and The Hunger Games' debuts, its opening is the second-highest in 2014 so far, behind 300: Rise of an Empire , which fell to fourth place with $8.7 million in its third week.
The same could not be said for Muppets Most Wanted , which landed at No. 2 with a disappointing $16.5 million in its first weekend. That's just a bit more than half of what The Muppets earned when it opened in 2011.
