Grey's Anatomy Recap: "We Gotta Get Out of This Place"
For a moment there, it looked like Grey's Anatomy was about to lose another doctor this season.
During Thursday's episode, Webber assumes that the docs are going to throw a surprise birthday party for him since Catherine will be stopping by later, but Owen gives him a retirement package instead, much to his dismay.
In truth, Catherine has come to Grey Sloan to encourage Jackson and April to sign a prenup. April eventually agrees to sign, but the pressure puts a spotlight on the things they haven't decided about their future. They also apologize to Catherine for making such a mess of things with their impromptu wedding.
Cristina enlists Shane to pick candidates for her trial so she can be impartial. But when a pregnant teenager tries to worm her way in, and Shane endorses her, it causes tension between teacher and student. Cristina accuses Shane of getting too emotionally involved. Are we going down the Izzie route again? Also, Cristina pushes Owen to join an internet dating site, even forcing him to create a profile. But he eventually invites Cristina home with him. Bow chicka wow wow.
Because the White House asked Derek to discontinue his censor trial with Callie, Dr. Torres hires a lawyer to settle the matter and threatens to sue him if he doesn't let her use the censors. Derek points out that she doesn't have a case since all of the patents are in his name. Derek finally calls the White House and stands up to them so he can continue working with Callie. After he threatens to walk, the White House finally agrees.
Elsewhere in the hospital, Alex tries to get Jo to sign the love contract, but she refuses because she fears the romance will go away. She finally agrees to sign it. Also, Meredith hires a new assistant to work on her trial.
As his birthday present, Webber helps Bailey on a rare case to remove the absorbed twin of a patient, which makes his birthday slightly better. Just when Webber thinks he'll be forced to retire, he walks in to a big surprise party. The retirement package was a red herring. Instead, Owen offers Webber a job as director of the residency program.
