Three DHS and PCHS students working as election officials today

Three high school students--two from Du Quoin High School and one from Pinckneyville Community High School--are working as election officials today.

DHS student Sydney Day will be working at the First United Pentecostal Church in Du Quoin. Cody Bailey will be working at the Du Quoin Youth club.

PCHS student Collin Smith will be working at the First United Methodist Church in Pinckneyville.

Perry County Clerk Josh Gross worked with instructor Ryan Summers and principal Matt Hickam at the Du Quoin High School and superintendent Keith Hagene at the Pinckneyville Community High School to arrange for the government students to have hands-on experience with elections.

You have until 7 p.m. tonight to cast your ballots.

Perry County Clerk Josh Gross announced last month that voters in seven of the county's precincts are reporting to different polling places. Voters in five Du Quoin Precincts and two Pinckneyville precincts will have new polling places beginning with the March 18, 2014 General Primary Election.

The polling places getting discontinued will be Du Quoin State Bank South Location, Christian Fellowship School, Du Quoin Counseling Center, Theobald Gymnasium, and Pinckneyville Fire Department.

The effected precincts were condensed into three locations:

Du Quoin Youth Club located at 2 East North Street,

United Pentecostal Church located at 1311 South Washington Street and the United Methodist Church of Pinckneyville located at 315 West South Street.

The Pentecostal Church is a new polling place for voters it was chosen primarily because of their very impressive facility with ample parking. The county clerk's office is grateful to the Pinckneyville Fire Department who has always been there to assist during elections.

"From a cost to the taxpayer perspective condensing polling places is always a wise move." Said clerk Gross "We were looking at future restrictions on allowable polling places those restrictions combined with changes in access at current locations make this an ideal time to consolidate."

The changes are the first polling place changes in Perry County since 2011. Households with registered voters in all effected precincts will be receiving mailed notification of the changes in the upcoming days.
