The Tomorrow People Welcomes a New Hero
Move over, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! There's a new avenger on the scene, and she's helping underrated sci-fi drama The Tomorrow People move into its new Monday-night home. "It's a redefining of the show," says executive producer Phil Klemmer of tonight's superpowered hour, which finds a costumed hero named the Red Avenger shaking things up for the subterranean team.
"The backstory is that Aaron Yoo's Russell, during his wild gambling days, fell in with this paranormal lady gambler and they [stole from] all these casinos," says Klemmer.
Eventually, the duo was torn apart by suspicion, betrayal and jail time. Now Russell's former partner in crime has changed her ways and is inspiring other gifted crime fighters around the country to assume the Red Avenger mantle, including Mallory (Parenthood's Lyndon Smith) who opens Russell's eyes to how his posse is taking the easy way out.
"We're impeaching our own series and turning our world on its head," Klemmer explains. "This character comes in and says, 'Hiding out in your bunker to protect your own asses is selfish - why not go public and make yourselves invaluable?'" After all, adds Klemmer with a laugh, "nobody is chasing Superman with pitchforks and torches."
The idea of revealing themselves to the world leads to a massive rift among the crew while also setting up some juicy story potential for the rest of the season. "The Red Avenger's message informs what all the Tomorrow People are doing in the final episodes," previews Klemmer, who also promises (among other things) a "big paranormal freak-out" in Times Square once Stephen (Robbie Amell) and company go public. "Taking the action aboveground is something we will definitely deliver on."
The Tomorrow People airs Mondays at 9/8c on The CW.
