OBITUARIES: Lawrence Hayden
Lawrence Hayden, 87, of Sandoval, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Odin Health Care Center. He was born July 16, 1926, the son of John W. and Lettishia (Vaughn) Hayden in Harrisburg.
He married Ruth Ella Alvey on April 26, 1947, at the Cottage Grove Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on June 27, 2012.
Survivors include his three sons Kenneth Hayden, wife Evelyn of York, Penn., Allen Hayden, wife Connie of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Russell "Rusty" Hayden, partner Jeff Brewer of Sacramento, Calif.; grandchildren, James Hayden, wife Brianna of Vancouver, British Columbia, Marcella Hill, husband Simon of Blaine, Wash., Erin Hayden of Santa Monica, Calif., Thomas Hayden of Denver, Colo., Michael Hayden, wife Lauren of Wauwatosa, Wis., Marc Hayden-Brewer and Brian Hayden-Brewer of Sacramento, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Marie Hayden of Flint, Mich.; Barbara Farris of Ridgway; brother-in-law, Royal Alvey, wife Mary Lou of Eldorado; great-grandchildren, Cassidy Hill, Elijah Hill and Isabella Hill.
In addition to his wife, Ruth Ella, he was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Cora, Else, Laura, Rena, Edith; four brothers, Charles, John, Ernest and Clyde; and two infant siblings.
Lawrence was a farmer and always considered himself a "man of the land." He was a member of the Sandoval United Methodist Church and Odin School Board from 1964 to 1988 and was actively involved with the Gideon's and Shalom ministry. He had a lifelong passion to fight against hunger and poverty and was honored with the Lawrence Hayden Food Walk. He was a member of the retired rural Postal Carriers and member of the NRA. He served in the Army during WWII. He enjoyed counting Cadillac's that passed by his house. Lawrence will be remembered for his great sense of humor.
Services with be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Sandoval United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Slaatte officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at the Cottage Grove Cemetery in Eldorado. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shalom Food Pantry or the Sandoval United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval.
