OBITUARY: Mary Elizabeth (Naas) DeVous
Mary Elizabeth (Naas) DeVous, 90, lifelong resident of Equality, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.
Mary was born on Sept. 12, 1923, in Equality to the late Emil and Annie (Muensterman) Naas.
She was a homemaker first, raising eight children. She then became a nurses aid working for Loretta Nursing Home in Shawneetown. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Equality, The Altar Society of the church and the Daughters of Isabella.
On Aug. 19, 1941, she married Robert DeVous and he preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1963.
Surviving are three sons: Robert (Barbara) DeVous of Harrisburg, Nicholas (Cynthia) DeVous of Equality and Louis (Mona) DeVous of Harrisburg; four daughters: Helen Casteel of Camarillo, Calif., Joyce (Richard) Hanson of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Nancy (Geoffrey) Senn of Minnetonka, Minn., and Alice (Stephen) Wathen of O'Fallon. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, James (Jimmy) DeVous; a grandchild, Ivy DeVous; and a son-in-law, Frank Casteel. She was also preceded in death by six brothers: Fred, Ray, Ed, Herb, Gene and Bobby Lee Naas; and three sisters: Johanna Wargel, Leona Abell and Ruth Drone. She was also preceded in death by a long time companion Mitch Kanady.
A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Equality with Father Steven Beatty officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Equality. Visitation will be held 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at the Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado.
