American Horror Story: Coven Brings Frankenstein Alive With Very Weird Love Story

American Horror Story: Coven has reunited dynamic duo Taissa Farmiga and Evan Peters for a love story that's even weirder than Season 1's ghost-on-ghost romance.

In the third season premiere, transplant Zoe (Farmiga) met frat boy Kyle (Peters) at a party in which his fraternity brothers raped Zoe's new witchy classmate Madison (Emma Roberts). It was Kyle who attempted to stop his brothers, but he ultimately paid the price for that when Madison flipped over their party bus, killing nearly everyone on board.

On Wednesday's episode, Zoe and Madison will attempt to repair the damage as the pair seeks out Kyle's body to reanimate him, which will facilitate executive producer Ryan Murphy's desire to reunite the young actors who have such undeniable chemistry.

American Horror Story: Coven stars answer burning questions on what's next

"I wanted to write something for them, a love story, but I wanted it to be different," Murphy says. "It's shocking to me how Taissa has grown up. She finished Season 1 and went off to make the Sofia Coppola movie [ The Bling Ring ] and there was really no part for her last season. After Jessica [Lange] and Sarah [Paulson], she's the one I called in first. They love working together, and Evan's girlfriend [Roberts] is also working on the show, but I made that work. There's a shorthand and they're comfortable, and the fans like that that love story, in some weird way, is reincarnated in the myth of the show."

In comparison to Season 1's story line - in which Farmiga's Violet Harmon fell in love with Peters' Tate, a ghost living in Murder House, before discovering that she had also died - Farmiga says this romance has a much different feel. "Zoe is at a different place in her life and so is Kyle," she says. "It's a much different scenario with where they are and how they interact with each other. Love is love. It could be crazy and different, but it's love."

"It's a forbidden type love," Peters adds. "I am undead and I am awkward and uncomfortable with my body and terrifying to be around because you don't know what I'm going to do. That's scary to love."

What's also scary is Zoe's ability to literally screw someone to death. Madison fondly calls her the Black Widow of witches. "I didn't know how to deal with Zoe's power when I first heard about it," Farmiga says, adding that the emotional weight of her power won't be the focus in the coming episodes. "She's not showing it, she's keeping it inside at the moment. There's so much going on. She just moved to this new place. A lot is going on so she's not focusing on that yet. But there comes a point where she has to figure that out because she likes this boy."

What you need to know about American Horror Story's witchy new season Coven

Farmiga first learned of her odd power when Murphy called her to return to the series, but she was game from Day 1. "He hinted at it in the conversation, but the first time I heard was when they overnighted me the first two scripts," she says. "I was reading it and I was like, 'Oh wow, OK. Um. All right, let's go shoot this in New Orleans!'"

It's the unpredictability of Kyle's current state that will consume Zoe, as she attempts to figure out whether they made a mistake in bringing him back to life. But it's Peters who will have the more difficult job in the first episodes since he doesn't actually speak during all of this. "It's interesting to make the choices for the character when you're doing all body language and face and eyes instead of words," he says, adding that the makeup process takes around four hours each day. "You can't speak, you have to communicate otherwise. It's not written as well, a lot of it, so you have to make it up and figure out what's the best thing to do."
