OBITUARY: Lewis M. "Penny" Penrod
Lewis M. "Penny" Penrod, 97, Harrisburg, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
He was born on April 1, 1916, in Vienna to the late Millington and Ella (Smith) Penrod. He married Bonnie Lou Cavitt on May 4, 1940, and she survives.
Lewis served his country during WWII in the United States Navy as a Seaman 2nd Class Gunner on the USS California. He worked for Dairy Brand Dairy from 1950 to 1973. Lewis was then employed by Harrisburg Unit School Dist No. 3 as custodian in the grade schools. He loved the children as well as his family, especially his sweetheart Bonnie to whom he was married 73 years. Children, grandchildren, & great grandchildren loved their "daddy", "papa" and "pepa". After retirement, Lewis took up golf and spent leisure time golfing gardening and fishing. He was a member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church where he served as deacon for 53 years, Sunday School Teacher and Young People Director.
Lewis was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from McKinley Avenue Baptist Church along with his wife Bonnie.
Lewis is survived by his wife Bonnie; daughter: Myra and husband Barry Bascom of Harrisburg; daughter: Roslyn Hasty of Cincinnati, Ohio; son: Wendell and wife Vicki Penrod of Mt. Vernon; and daughter: Pam and husband Joel Bond of Harrisburg; three grandchildren: Dawn Brown of Galatia; Chris and wife Marci Hasty of Columbus, Ohio, and Jason Penrod of Indianapolis, Ind.; three great-grandchildren: Kelsey, Kylee and Keaton Brown of Galatia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sister: Louise Houser; three brothers: Walter, Hal Gene and Leonard Penrod; and a son-in-law: Jay Hasty.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Dr. Blaine Welker will officiate assisted by the Rev. Matt Hall. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to McKinley Avenue Baptist Church and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
