OBITUARY: Allen Douglas "Doug" Gidcumb

Allen Douglas "Doug" Gidcumb, 92, Harrisburg, passed away at 10:19 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg.

Doug was born on Tuesday, May 17, 1921, in Harrisburg, to the late Joseph Allen and Ruth (Curtis) Gidcumb. He married Edna "Fern" Dixon on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1941, and she survives. Doug served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corp as a B-17 Bomber pilot. He was owner of Gidcumb Furniture in Harrisburg. Doug was a member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church, and was a former member of the Harrisburg Masonic Lodge. Doug obtained his brokers license to sell real estate and he was very active in the Golden Circle Senior Citizens.

Doug is survived by his wife, Edna "Fern" Gidcumb of Harrisburg; daughter, Brenda Karnes and her husband Gary of Naples, Fla.; son, Greg Gidcumb and his wife Michele of Ft. Collins, Colo.; a brother, Richard Gidcumb of Salem, Mo.; a sister, Dianna Rees of Harrisburg; seven grandchildren, Grant Allen Karnes of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kyle Ray Karnes of Ithaca, N.Y., Kimberly Liston of Springfield, Mo., Joshua Gidcumb of Champaign, Bradley James of San Francisco, Calif., Shane Gidcumb of Healdsburg, Calif., and Jesse Gidcumb of San Francisco, Calif.; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sharon Gidcumb; and two brothers, Winston Gidcumb and Clifford Gidcumb.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. Dewayne Taylor will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Garden Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Harrisburg and Carrier Mills American Legions and the National Guard. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013.
