Street Machine Nationals: Five-day ban on glass bottle sales June 26
f you like your beer and whiskey out of a glass bottle, you better stock up now.
Because of the Street Machine Nationals' return to Du Quoin starting about Thursday, June 27 and running through Sunday, June 30 the city begins invoking a five-day ban on alcohol sales in glass bottles as a safety matter on Wednesday, June 26.
Large signs have already gone up in the liquor aisle and at the cash registers at Walmart in Du Quoin. Signs are starting to show up at places like the Du Quoin Casey's stores and Moto Mart.
The ban ends with the close of the show on Sunday, June 30. Here are the provisions of the ordinance:
Whereas, the mayor and city council of the City of Du Quoin find that it is in the best interests of the citizens of the City of Du Quoin to amend the ordinances of the City of Du Quoin so as to forbid the sale of alcoholic liquor in glass containers in the City of Du Quoin.
Now, therefore it is ordained by the city council of the City of Du Quoin as follows:
(a.) The city council hereby finds that the practice of sale of alcoholic liquor in glass containers contributes to injury of persons due to fighting with the glass containers as well as injury to persons and property due to thrown glass containers.
(b.) Sale or possession of alcoholic liquor in glass containers prohibited. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or establishment classified as Class A & B establishments, licensed to sell alcoholic liquor under Chapter 21 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Du Quoin to sell any alcoholic liquor in glass containers from June 26, 2013 to June 30, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. It shall further be unlawful for any person to possess alcoholic liquor in glass containers at any public place, excluding the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, from June26, 2013 to June 30, 2013 at 11:59 p.m.
(c.) Any person violating the provisions of this section shall, upon conviction be subject to immediate revocation or suspension of any liquor license held under the terms of Chapter 21 of the Code or Ordinances of the City of Du Quoin in addition to the penalties set forth in the Code of Ordinances of the City of Du Quoin except the following provisions for minimum fines and/or assignment to community service shall apply.
The fine for the first offense is $250, the second $500 and subsequent offenses $750.
