OBITUARY: Fred Storment
Fred Storment of Corona, Calif., (former resident) passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the age of 79 of cardiac arrest.
Fred was born May 17, 1933, in Walnut Hill in Marion County Illinois, son of Fred and Audrey (Myers) Storment. He left the area at 17 years old for the army where he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division as a light weapon infantry man, rifle machine gunner, then 60 mm mortar in that order. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was also a Platoon Sergeant. Fred was in the military from July 1950 to May 1955; most of it in the Far East, Japan and Korea. He was wounded in Korea on May 18, 1951 on his 18th birthday. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star and National Defense Service Medal. Fred was very proud of his service to his country and especially of being chosen a "Soldier of the Month."
Fred worked 32 years in the insurance field, retiring as a claims supervisor in San Francisco, Calif., Financial District. He and his wife Mary were members of St. Mel's Catholic Church in Norco, Calif.
Fred leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mary (Mossman) Storment; daughter, Stephanie (Ron) Underdown; son, Robert (Melissa) Storment; grandchildren, Zachary Underdown, Garrett and Timothy Storment; sister-in-law, Jean (Mossman) Heaton; and numerous nieces; nephews; cousins; and his beloved dog, Yahtzee.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents along with his brother C. "Mack" Storment; and sister-in-law Shirley (Harris) Storment; niece Barbara Jean Storment; and nephew Freddy Heaton.
Rosary was recited at Thomas Miller Mortuary, 1118 E. Sixth St. in Corona, Calif., Tuesday evening, April 30, 2013, led by Deacon Joe Vela. Military Honor Guard stood guard.
Services were held at St. Mel's Catholic Church in Norco, Calif., at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013, by the Rev. Declan Fogarty, pastor. Fred was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Color Guard who presided at the services.
Interment followed in the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif., with full military honors with 21 gun salute and taps.
