OBITUARY: Ruth (Sloan) Girot

Ruth (Sloan) Girot, 85, of Galatia, passed away 1:26 p.m. Aug. 20, 2012, at Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado. Ruth was born Nov. 11, 1926, in Galatia to Grover Monroe and Nova (Durham) Sloan.

Ruth was married to Bruce Girot June 9, 1945, at Long Branch Baptist Church in Galatia and he preceded her in death Dec. 7, 1996. Ruth started her teaching career in a one room school house in 1945 at Muggin School in Raleigh Township until the school closed. She went on to teach at Chenault School in Raleigh Township until that school closed. She then taught at Muddy Grade School for four years. She taught at Dorrisville for many years before she became a guidance counselor at Harrisburg High School. Ruth retired after 38 years of teaching. While teaching full time she attended Southern Illinois University and earned her bachelors degree and her masters degree. Ruth was a long time member of Long Branch Baptist Church.

Ruth is survived by her son, Mike (Robbie) Girot; three grandchildren; Julie Albers, Joe (Bebe) Girot and Jill Girot; two great-grandchildren, Jaci Jo Wood and Andy Girot; one brother, Grover Gene (Betty) Sloan; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Bluford, Charles Ray and Roswell Sloan; and three sisters, Margaret Jones, Sally Adams and Beulah Bond.

Visitation is 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Sloan Funeral Home. Interment will be at Durham Cemetery in Galatia. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Durham Cemetery.
