Obituary: Ovie Edwards

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Ovie Edwards, 82, of 11787 Nixville Road, Carrier Mills, died 5:43 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2012, at his residence.

Graveside memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2012, at Liberty Cemetery, north of Carrier Mills. The Rev. Harl Cockrum and the Rev. Ownly Williams will officiate. There will be no visitation; all friends should go directly to the cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Carrier Mills American Legion, Harrisburg American Legion and the National Guard Ritual Team. Memorials may be made to the Ritual Team; envelopes will be available at the cemetery or may be mailed to the funeral home. Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Nov. 28, 1929, in rural Carrier Mills to the late Carrol and Verna (West) Edwards.

He married the former Barbara Mandrell on Nov. 1, 1951, in Piggott, Ark., and she survives.

He served in the U.S. Army for four years, which included 26 months stationed in Korea during the Korean War.

He graduated Southern Illinois University in 1955 with a degree in TV repair; he was self employed for 40 years and also worked for Illinois State and Williamson County Highway Department of Transportation retiring in 1992.

He was also a Williamson County precinct committeeman for 50 years being the county chairman for four years.

He also helped perform military rites for over 60 years for veterans&#39; funerals.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Edwards of Carrier Mills; son, Alan (Kim) Edwards of Carrier Mills; daughter, Donna (Brian) Williams of Marion; grandchildren, Tiarra (Derek) Osman, Brocton Williams and Trista Williams; great-grandchild, Treyton Osman and one on the way; and three sisters, Alma Lee Edwards and Vernice Owen both of Carrier Mills and Nilagene (Harley) Smith of Harrisburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother; mother-in-law; father-in-law; stepfather-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.
