At 1:59 a.m. police received an anonymous call from someone reporting James Mattingly had accidentally set himself on fire, according to Chief Bob Smith.

Officers arrived and spoke to the man they later identified as James Virgil Mattingly, 40, 600 S. Granger St., Harrisburg.

Mattingly denied he had been on fire. Officers observed no obvious burns, but believed Mattingly was under the influence as he could not carry on a conversation and was exhibiting nervous twitching, Smith said.

Mattingly complied with officers' request to unbutton and open his shirt and officers observed what they believed to be fresh chemical burns on Mattingly's abdomen, Smith said.

After receiving consent to search the motel room officers located an active meth lab they estimated to contain 215 grams of cooking meth and numerous items commonly used in meth production.

An Illinois State Police meth response team arrived to clean the hazardous materials.

Police charged Mattingly and Brandy Marie-Oveta Pavone, 21, 505 Hopkinton St., Rosiclare - after both confirmed they were occupants of the room - with methamphetamine manufacturing and possession of controlled substance.
