Obituary: William 'Bill' Scherrer

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[William "Bill" Scherrer, 92, lifelong resident of Shawneetown, died Saturday April 21, 2012, at Fountainview Nursing Home in Eldorado.

Bill was born Sept. 12, 1919, in Shawneetown, a son of George Bernard and Susan Maria (Leavell) Scherrer. On Oct. 12, 1940, he married the former Louise Dietz, who survives.

Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned and operated Scherrers IGA in Shawneetown for over 50 years and later opened a IGA store in Harrisburg. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shawneetown and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Louise Sherrer; a daughter, Margie Clayton of Shawneetown; a son, Billy (Chris) Scherrer of Shawneetown; two brothers, John Scherrer of Ridgway and Bob Scherrer of South Carolina; six grandchildren, Tony Scherrer, Lee Scherrer, Scott Scherrer, Eric Scherrer, Gary Clayton and Mindy Calloway; six great-grandchildren; and two great-stepgrandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Louise Scherrer; three brothers, George Scherrer, Ed Scherrer and Bernard Scherrer; a sister, Gertrude Austin; and a granddaughter, Dee Clayton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shawneetown with Fr. Steven Beatty officiating. Burial will follow with military rites at St. Joseph Cemetery in Ridgway. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, at Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown.
