Obituary: Virdon Garrett

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Virdon Garrett was called to his heavenly home on Jan. 29, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Norman and Bertha Garrett; his brother, Truman Garrett; wife, Rosellen Garner Garrett and Marylou Reasons Garrett; and grandson, Eric Peterson.

Virdon leaves three children, Cheryl Peterson, Steve Garrett and Norman Garrett; four stepchildren, Anita Kingery, Helen Etienne, Martha Potter and Carl Reasons.

Virdon was blessed with many grand and great-grandchildren.

Virdon served in the Marine Corps during World War II. After returning from the war he attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he received his bachelors and his master&#39;s degrees in education. He taught at Eldorado High School and Sterling Township High School. He returned to Galatia to take the position of the Galatia schools superintendent. He moved to Harrisburg to become assistant administrator at the Harrisburg hospital. Virdon was a member of Bankston Fork Baptist Church, where he was also a deacon. Virdon loved what his Creator made on earth, he loved to spend time fishing and hunting. Virdon was a devoted Christian and thanked God every day for the blessings that He had bestowed on him throughout his life. He will be sadly and fondly missed by many family members and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday Feb. 3, 2012, at the Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia with visitation from 11 a.m. to the funeral hour at the funeral home on Friday. The Rev. Mark Hutson will officiate with burial in the Webber Campground Cemetery and military rites by the Harrisburg and Carrier Mills American Legions and Marion Honor Guard.
