Obituary: Catherine Rhoades Peeples Logsdon

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Catherine Rhoades Peeples Logsdon, 99, lifelong resident of Shawneetown, died surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, in Evansville, Ind.

Catherine was born in Shawneetown on Aug. 29, 1912, to the late Lawrence R. and Elizabeth Clyde Todd Peeples. She graduated from the Shawneetown Community High School at the age of 15, graduating with the second graduating class from SCHS. Catherine then attended and graduated from the beauty school in Harrisburg. On Dec. 25, 1934, she married Frederick Lawrence Logsdon, who died in 1968. Catherine and Fred owned and operated Logsdon Hardware Store for many years. Prior to this, she owned and operated a restaurant, beauty shop and dress shop in Old Shawneetown.

She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shawneetown and a former member of the Shawneetown Band Parent's Association. "Miss Catherine" frequently chaperoned trips and other youth activities when her daughters were involved. She was active in the celebration of the Shawneetown Sesquicentennial and, along with her husband, was among those who helped make the move from the Old Town site to New Town following the 1937 Flood.

Catherine enjoyed her role as wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be missed by many. She was blessed with good health and a long life; therefore she was a valuable source of local history and was always willing to share her knowledge and memories with interested people. She enjoyed being outside and had many varied hobbies.

Catherine was the mother of four daughters, including the late Catherine Peeples "Kay" Logsdon Atwood; Edith Frederica "Freddie" Logsdon Garnett (Alex) from Harrisburg; Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Logsdon Oldham (Charles) from Shawneetown; and Margaret Isabelle "Peggy" Logsdon Luckhurst (Kenneth) from Evansville, Ind. She had 11 grandchildren, including Stephanie Atwood Rider, Mary Oldham Belanger (Scott), Jennifer Atwood, Charles Oldham III (Kimberly), the late Catherine Ann Oldham, Larry Ingoldsby (Beth); Amanda Atwood Ward; Elizabeth Garnett Lack (Joe), Brenna Garnett Hopkins (Kelsey), Joseph Oldham and Megan Luckhurst.

Her 21 great-grandchildren are Whitney Belford and Matt Rider; Alyssa and Candace Lindsey, Sophia, Cash and Hope Isabella Ward; Nathan, Dustin and Morgan Oldham; Jonah, Zach, Seth, Savannah and Haley Belanger; Remy, Bronwyn, Gwendolyn and Parrish Ingoldsby; and Lauren and Gretchen Lack.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter; one granddaughter; and a sister, Margaret Peeples Miley.

Visitation for Catherine Logsdon will be at the Presbyterian Church in Shawneetown beginning at 11 a.m. until funeral time, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at the church followed by burial in historic Westwood Cemetery. The Rev. Monica Gould from the Mount Vernon, Ind. Presbyterian Church will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
