The boyfriend, Terry Bond, 26, of McLeansboro, was making repairs to the roof when the boys' mother, Heather Josey, drove up and asked where the 4-year-old was, the station said. According to police, the 9-year-old joined the search by walking around the perimeter of the pond. The 9-year-old, not named by investigators, spotted his brother lying face down in the water.
Bond and the child's mother drove the boy to the hospital in McLeansboro, where efforts to revive him were not successful. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday, the station said.
Hamilton County Sheriff Greg Brenner said the scene of the accident was just off Golf Course Road at the edge of McLeansboro.
