Child killed in Sumner after being hit by car

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[A child was killed Monday in Sumner after being hit by a car and the driver is in custody and facing several charges.

Lawrence County Sheriff&#39;s Department received a call at approximately noon Monday that a child had been struck by a car on East South Street in Sumner. The child was later identified as David Kearby, 7, of Sumner.

The driver was identified as Chad Hayes, 31, of Sumner.

A preliminary report from Lawrence County Sheriff&#39;s Department stated that Hayes was driving south on East South Street when Kearby, who was riding a bicycle, traveled into the lane of traffic.

Kearby was transported to Lawrence County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Hayes was arrested and charged with aggravated DUI, endangering the health or life of a child, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure of driver to exercise due care.

He is currently in custody in Lawrence County Jail awaiting bond.

An investigation is being conducted by Illinois State Police, Lawrence County Sheriff&#39;s Department, Sumner Police Department and the Lawrence County Coroner&#39;s office.
