Harold 'Jack' Brothers
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Harold "Jack" Brothers, 86, Carrier Mills, died Tuesday afternoon Dec. 28, 2010, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Jack was born west of Carrier Mills on March 2, 1924, to Everett and Margaret (Tanner) Brothers.
He was proud to be a World War II U.S. Army veteran, going across Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge, with the 90th Infantry Division of Gen. George Patton's Third Army, ending at Strakonice, a town about 35 miles inside Czechoslovakia.
After the war, he married Valeta Fischer on June 8, 1947. They had over 63 wonderful years together.
Jack was retired after 38 years as a coal miner with Blue Bird and Sahara coal companies. He also enjoyed farming. He was quite a gardener, with many enjoying sweet corn and turnips he had grown.
Jack was a dedicated Christian man and was a longtime member of Carrier Mills First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and teacher.
Jack would want to remind everyone that he was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.
He is survived by his wife, Valeta; a son, Danny (Sherry) Brothers of Quincy; a daughter, Anita (Brothers) Layman and husband Ted of Carrier Mills; and three sisters, Monzelle Hanson of Carrier Mills, Virginia Gast of Tomah, Wis. and Lavetta Pope and husband Bruce of St. Peters, Minn.
Jack also had six grandchildren, Jeff Brothers and family of Overland Park, Kan., Dana (Brothers) Renfrow and family of Quincy, Scott Layman and family of Carrier Mills, David Brothers of Overland Park, Kan., Zach Layman and family of Carrier Mills and Kari Layman of Carrier Mills. He also had seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home, Carrier Mills. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will be Salem Cemetery with military rites.
Jack and his family prefer memorials to First Baptist Church, Carrier Mills, in lieu of flowers.
