Verna Howton Angell Grider
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Verna Howton Angell Grider, 81, formerly of Marion, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon.
Verna Howton Angell Grider was born to James Moses and Lillian Lambert Howton in Dorrisville, Saline County, on April 8, 1929. She was the third child and second daughter in a family of 12 children. Two siblings, Norma Raines and Robert Howton, preceded her in death.
She was married to James "Jack" Angell on July 12, 1952, in Pigott, Ark., and was married for 31 years before his death on Sept. 8, 1983. She leaves two children, Marlin Angell, of Germantown, Tenn., wife, Denise, and grandchildren, Brittany Elster Angell, Germantown, Jared Angell of Oklahoma City and Sara Angell of Austin, Texas and Janel Angell Loucks of Glen Carbon, husband, Mark and granddaughter, Alexandria.
Verna married William A. Grider on April 29, 1994. He preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2005.
She attended Sadler School in Saline County, Mountain Township, for eight years and graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1946.
Verna is best remembered for the 18 years that she ran a neighborhood beauty shop from her home on South Vicksburg Street. In her later years, she fulfilled a dream of obtaining her licensed practical nursing degree and worked at Friendship Care Nursing Home in Marion, as well as Annenberg Manor in Manassas, Va.
Verna was always active in church and community. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and in later years, was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. In 2007, she moved to Glen Carbon and transferred her membership to St. John's United Methodist Church.
She always enjoyed her church, her work and her family. Verna found life challenging, rewarding and fulfilling because of her love for Christ. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by siblings, Kenneth, James, Stanley, Mike, Gary, Gerald Howton, Margaret Prehn, Sandra Dawson, Kathleen Billingsley and many nieces and nephews.
Verna will be remembered by her family as a great cook, especially remembered for her vinegar dumplings and German chocolate cake.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion with the Rev. Sheryl Palmer officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home on Tuesday.
