She was born on May 9, 1935, in Harrisburg to Hubert and Vegie (Belt) Simpson. Doris married the Rev. Roy Hughes on Dec. 23, 1955, in Harrisburg.
Doris was actively involved in church ministry with her husband Roy for over 53 years. She loved serving the Lord in children's, women's and senior adult ministries. She spent her lifetime helping and serving others. Her definition of family had no limits and instantly loved all who entered her life. She never met a stranger. Each day of her life was spent with her Lord, music, love, friends and her family. Doris left this world on a Sunday at Harco Baptist Church where she was a member doing exactly what she loved -- serving her Lord Jesus Christ while playing with children.
Surviving is her husband, Roy; son, Greg (Jane) Hughes; two daughters, Diana (Roger) Teal and Deidre (Brandon) Hughes Hudley; six grandchildren, Adam, Kimberly, Rachel, Josiah, Jeremiah and Jolie Evelyn; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Lacey; three brothers, Jim, Jack and Troyce Simpson; and a sister, Wilma Gulley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ricky; three brothers, Bill, Roy and Johnny; and four sisters, Naida, Mary, Helen and Mabel.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at the Harco Baptist Church with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at the Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia. Burial will be in the Ingram Hill Cemetery, Harrisburg, with the Rev. Vergil Cox officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Harrisburg in her honor.
