Shirley Janet Martin

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Shirley Janet Martin, 80, of Mount Vernon, passed away 2:44 a.m. Thursday, June 24, 2010, at her home in Mount Vernon.

Shirley was born Nov. 28, 1929, in Pope County, the daughter of Joyce and Lula Mae (Carter) Rose. She married Kenneth Martin on Aug. 6, 1949; he survives in Mount Vernon.

Mrs. Martin loved her yard, home and most of all her family.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Kenneth Martin of Mount Vernon; one son, Gregory Martin and wife Sarah of Mount Vernon; two sisters, Wanda Gillispie of Marion and Barbara Volkmann and husband Wally of Kankakee; brother-in-law, Michael "Mickey" Martin and wife Carla of Galatia; two grandchildren, Megan Martin and special friend Mike Cappel of Cincinnati, Ohio and Cory Martin of Mount Vernon; and also a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister Ida Lee "Spud" Hill; nephew, Lance Gillispie; and her in-laws, Kenneth and Velma (Nolen) Martin.

Private family interment services will be held at a later date in Zion Cemetery near Ozark.

For those wish, in lieu of flowers memorials may be given in memory of Shirley Martin to the Zion Cemetery and will be accepted at the service or mailed to Newell Funeral Home, 2707 North St., Mount Vernon, Ill. 62864.

The family would like to give special thanks to Serena, Jane, Deanne, Laurel, Gayle, Marrianne and Jennifer for all their help in caring so compassionately for Shirley during her illness.
