Everett Gene Garrett

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Everett Gene Garrett, 82, 1050 W. Main St., Carlinville, formerly of Linton, Ind., and Saline County, died 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at Heritage Manor, Carlinville.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home, Carlinville, with the Rev. John Curtis and the Rev. Bob Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery with military rites. Visitation is 8:30 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.

He was born Nov. 8, 1926, in Marco, Ind., to Everett Irl and Mary Catherine (Timmerman) Garrett. On Aug. 14, 1946, he married the former Margaret Jane Lind at the Methodist parsonage in Pleasantville, Ind.

Gene was an electrical engineer in the mining industry for 41 years. The last 12, he served as a consultant for Peabody Coal of St. Louis, Mo., and retired in 1987. He was a member of Carlinville United Methodist Church, Carlinville Elks Lodge No. 1412 and Carlinville Lions Club. He graduated Marco High School in 1944. He was a World War II Navy Electrician Mate 3rd class Petty Officer, first group into Hiroshima after the bombing and was present for the signing of the peace treaty.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Terry Jane (Dr. James Kirk) Hess; two grandsons, Brian Hess of Chicago and Sean Hess of St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Arnold and Willis Ray Garrett.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, Macoupin County Historical Society or Carlinville Hospital Building Fund.
