Doug Stone
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[A visitation gathering for Mr. Wayne Douglas "Doug" Stone, 69, of Cookeville, Tenn., will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Military honors will follow the visitation at 6 p.m.
Mr. Stone died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 at his home following a long battle with lung cancer.
He was born Dec. 29, 1939, in Anna to the late Hubert Douglas and Eva Marie Penrod Stone and special parents, Wayne and Juanita Rister Stallings.
Raised in Harrisburg, Doug went to Austin Peay State University on a basketball scholarship.
While serving in the Marine Corps, he was editor of The CheVron in San Diego, Calif.
In his writing career, he was sports editor of the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle, editor of the Donelson News-Diary, editor of The All-State at Austin Peay and assistant. director of sports information at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
He moved to Cookeville, Tenn., in 1968 to fill the position at Tennessee Tech of director of sports information, and later was director of public information, director of news, alumni, placement, director of Boys State publicity, director of Eagle Boosters Inc., director of news services, and assistant dean for information services.
In 1980, Doug began the advertising agency W D Stone and Associates. He retired in 2008.
Doug was the state masters racquetball champion three years in a row.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Alice Laverne Simmons and Betty Lou Stone.
Mr. Stone is survived by his wife of 34 years, Adrienne Bussell Stone; son and daughter-in-law, Roman Chastaine and Beth Holland Stone; and grandson, Sawyer Duclos Stone, all of Cookeville; three brothers, Miletus Eugene Stone, Omer Lee Stone and John Thomas Stone; sister and brother-in-law, Kay Dixon and Gary Curto of Cookeville; nieces, Christy Korrow, Suzanne Stone and Leslie Stone; nephews, Adam Wade Bussell, Bryan and John Curto; and great-nieces, Kaysha and Gabrielle Korrow.
