</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Helen M. Smiley, 88, of rural Route 1 Box 1AA, Broughton, died 5:10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at Ferrell Hospital, Eldorado.

Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Crab Orchard. Arrangements are in the charge of Watson Funeral Home, Eldorado.

She was born Sept. 21, 1920, in Carterville to William and Stella (Thomas) Watson. On Aug. 3, 1945, she married Carl Smiley, who preceded her in death on May 26, 1990.

She was a homemaker, a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge in Marion and a member of Crab Orchard United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Patsy (Michael) Simpson of Broughton; and a granddaughter, Melissa Chapelain of Allegan, Mich.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lou Pearce, in March 2007; three brothers; and three sisters.
