It's mostly quiet as village election date draws near

Only two area villages will have contested races when voters hit the polls March 18.

The Village of Canisteo has three people running for two two-year trustee positions.

Incumbent trustees Tim Harkenrider, a Republican, and William Tucker, a Democrat, are running for re-election, while fending off a challenge from newcomer Mike Palmer. Harkenrider and Palmer were selected at the village's Republican caucus, while Tucker was the sole nominee of the Democrats at their caucus.

The Village of Nunda also has a contest, with four people vying for two two-year trustee positions. Incumbent Democrat Monica Morris is seeking re-election to her post, while fending off a challenge from Democrat Rose Beardsley and Republicans Curt Simmons and Ken Veneron, the latter a former village board member.

Voting will take place from noon to 9 p.m. for all municipalities.

The rest of area villages all have uncontested races, barring any write-in campaigns. A look at the rest of area municipalities:

l Village of Alfred - one Democrat and one Republican are on the ballot for two two-year trustee positions, and both were endorsed by both parties. Democrat Becky Prophet, an incumbent trustee, and Republican Bradley Bowden are running; the latter candidate to replace Trustee Marion Weaver, who decided not to seek re-election.

Voting will take place at the village hall.

l Village of Almond - three incumbents are running to fill three seats. Trustees Joy Stuart and Ben Palmer are seeking re-election for two-year terms, while Mayor Bob Morford is running for another two-year term. All three candidates are members of the Citizens Party.

The municipal building will be Almond's polling place.

l Village of Arkport - none of the races are opposed, and all are bring sought by Republican newcomers. For the two-year mayor position, Jeff Roderick is on the ballot, while Beth Smith and Jon Hedges are seeking two-year trustee terms. Jeff Bossie is seeking to fill a one-year trustee term.

Voting will take place in the village's community room.

l Village of Avoca - Trustee Michael Robbins is running unopposed for a two-year term for mayor, looking to fill the position being vacated by William Hunt, who opted not to run for re-election.

In the hunt for two two-year trustee terms are incumbent James Johnson and newcomer Peter Gledhill. All candidates in the village run as independent candidates, and no primaries take place.

l Village of Canaseraga - incumbent Republican Don VanSkiver will seek re-election to his post for another two years, while newcomer Nicole McIntosh, a Democrat, will be seeking the second two-year trustee position up for grabs.

Voting is at the municipal building.

l Village of Cohocton - two incumbents are seeking two two-year trustee terms - Janice Sahrle and Daniel McClure - the latter an appointee last year to fill an unexpired term. Also up for election is the four-year term as justice, which incumbent Ronald Snyder is seeking.

l Village of Dansville - the village's elected representatives serve four-year terms, and none of the positions are up for grabs this year.

l Village of North Hornell - Incumbent trustees Glenn Thomas, a Republican, and Frank Libordi, an Independent, are both seeking re-election to their positions, both two-year terms.

Voting will take place at the village hall.

l Village of Wayland - the village's elected representatives serve four-year terms, and there are no positions to be chosen this year.
