Divers recover body, vehicle from Fox River
Police have not released the name of a man who was found dead in a vehicle in the Fox River near Laurelwood Park in Batavia.
At about 7:38 p.m. Monday, a witness saw a man drive into the river, according to Cmd. Gregory Thrun with the Batavia Police Department. Divers from Aurora and St. Charles began a search and located the car in the river but had to call off the search temporarily due to strong currents and darkness.
Divers began again at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. A silver BMW registered to a St. Charles man, about age 60, was pulled from the river with a body inside.
The car had been submerged in about 12 to 15 feet of icy water, Thrun said.
Family members of the car owner have confirmed he is missing and that his vehicle is also missing, police said.
Thrun said the man in the vehicle generally matches the description of the person to whom the car is registered.
An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
