Wrote to Mother, Father and Paul. I realize every day now how much I owe them and how little I have down toward repaying them. It has taken a pretty severe lesson to wake me to my responsibilities, but if it has wakened me thoroughly, it will not be in vain. I hope I may soon begin to show them I am different than I was before this affair.

Wrote to Mother and B. tonight. Studied S.S. lesson and C.E. text as usual and finished "The Making of Simon Peter," an excellent, helpful and instructive book. It gives one a better insight into the Scriptures and Peter's life. He was so much like men of today and some of his failings so much like mine, that one is encouraged to do his best.
I see everyday how much easier it is to fight out each day's battles and to bec(ome) the better able to over those of tomorrow. Sometimes those of tomorrow seem to be vanquished today's fight. If one determines to do a little better each day, and continually keeps that determination in mind, there is less to overcome.
- Monday morning, March 30, 1908 (just before his execution)
Went to bed at 12:30 and was asleep in a few minutes. Slept soundly until called at 3:45. Feel refreshed and calm. I am surprised that I can look at this matter so calmly. Had communion for the first time. ... Had a very nice little breakfast and appreciate everyone's kindness. They have all been so kind and courteous. I am very grateful to each one.
