Matt Trowbridge: Offensive line, safety, keeping Briggs key for fixing Bears

Here's a quick fix for the Bears: cut loose Bernard Berrian, Brian Griese, Fred Miller, Darwin Walker, Ricky Manning Jr. and Adam Archuletta. Re-sign Lance Briggs. Draft safety Kenny Phillips of Miami with the No. 14 overall pick. If he's gone, trade down and grab a left tackle late in the first round and another offensive lineman and a safety in the second. Add All-Pro guard Alan Faneca and QB Daunte Culpepper.

Lovie Smith is right; the Bears are "close." This is a great draft for offensive linemen, with four expected to go in the bottom half of the first round. Devin Hester can replace Berrian as a Willie Gault-type deep threat who'll create room for Cedric Benson to run. Nathan Vasher's injury killed the Bears in 2007; Quick Shots subscribes to the Al Davis theory that defenses start with the two cornerbacks. And Lovie's Cover-2 needs a play-making safety.
