Wise to the Word: Hoppin' John

This dish of black-eyed peas cooked with salt pork, onions and seasonings is mixed with or served over rice. Legend says Hoppin' John was created by African slaves on southern plantations. Today, it is traditionally served on New Year's Day to bring luck for the coming year.
