First Fenwick Fall Classic road race takes off without a hitch

The Fenwick Fall Classic, a 5 kilometer road race, was put on by John Childs, Health and Safety Coordinator Northeast Region of Spectra Energy in Waltham, and many of his former Fenwick track teammates back in the 70s. Childs and his cohorts wanted to do something that would benefit the victims of the Danversport explosion last year. The funds raised went directly to the Danvers Community Council fund, which was created to provide basic needs to the affected residents.

One of Child's teammates, who was also part of the race's organizing committee, grew up in the Danversport neighborhood, and as a team they would spend time there. Years later, they thought it was time to give something back to a place that provided such cherished memories for them as teenagers.

They hope that this is just the beginning of their fundraising efforts to help out worthy causes throughout the area.

On race day, the event itself passed through the affected neighborhood, beginning and ending at Bishop Fenwick High School. There was a DJ on hand, as well as a post-race celebration, complete with aerial photography.
