Charita Goshay: Why rename street after MLK?

On March 20, 1964, the Rev. Sheridan E. Lancaster, pastor of St. Paul AME Church, met the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Akron-Canton Airport. Led by a phalanx of police, the two made their way to the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse, where King was scheduled to speak. Noting the sheriff's deputies posted on the roof, King thanked the young minister for his efforts, but bluntly added: "Lancaster, you can't protect me."

In the decades that followed, Lancaster, who died in 1997, often recalled that moment.
